Interview: RENOUNCED

1. Hey there, please introduce the band and everyone behind it to the readers of FTAR ..??!

Morning Agus, We are a hardcore / metalcore band from the UK called Renounced. The band consists of 5 members; Sam Knight (EX Abolition) on guitar, Martin Arnold on bass, Daniel Rayner on Guitar, Jack Bryant on Drums and myself Daniel Gray on vocals. Members of the band are vegan and straight edge but we are not a vegan or edge band.

2. Please tell us about RENOUNCED, some history of why and how did it start??!

Renounced started around a year and a half ago. It took a long time to find the right members for this band. We knew exactly what sound we wanted and it was hard to find people who understood what we wanted. We where sick of bullshit bands turning up in commercial magazines shoots and throwing the term Metalcore around. It was time for this to change.

3. RENOUNCED’s sound really reminds me about the old days of 90’s metallic hardcore, seems to me that you guys are really influenced by those era, what or who has inspired RENOUNCED’s music?

Renounced play late 90’s to early 2000’s Metalcore, we take influences from bands such as: SkyCameFalling, 7A7P, Poison The Well, and Disembodied. This style of hardcore talks to us more than any other.

4. By far, how many releases have been unleashed? Can you share us some of your discography?

We have an EP called ‘Conditioned From Birth’ which was put out by Atonement Records and a recently released LP called ‘The Melancholy we Ache’ out on CTWRECORDS.

5. “Melancholy We Ache” the last album release by Carry The Weight Records, what can you tell me about this album?

We wanted to produce this as DIY as possible. So we did it in our drummer’s house, over a period of around 4 months. We feel it captures an era of hardcore that has been lost in time. We put a years worth of writing into this record, and we poured out our hearts with the intent to put out a record as sincere as possible. The LP is also going to be repressed in the next few months, which is awesome. Keep an eye out for some limited editing sleeves and colourways.

6. And your relationship with Carry The Weight Records? and beside CTW, did “Melancholy…” also re-release by another labels?

CTW contacted us just after we put out our EP. Pat Hassan asked us if we would be interested in putting out our LP on CTW and we could have not been happier to join the best label in the UK. The LP is also currently being put out on tape by: OffCloudNine, Life Lair Regret and Diorama Records.

7. So far, what kind of reactions you get with the release of “Melancholy….” ?? Especially from the kids around the world?!

The reaction we have received so far has been mind blowing. We put so much time into this record and it’s a nice feeling to know it’s paid off. This record has been a really good outlet for me and I have let go of a few things that have burdened me mentally. Having people relate and sing along at shows is a great feeling, and I thank everyone who has checked this record out or comes to a show.

8. UK, the current HC scene there seems to be really interesting with few great acts coming up, bands like xREPENTANCEx, SABOTEUR, and RENOUNCED seems to take back the spirit of 90’s hardcore/metal, what can you tell me about this and do you have any following names recommended for us?!

UK currently has some great bands; XrepentanceX are killing it, but definitely check out Guidance, they are probably the most underrated band going. Also check out bands such as The Flex, Violent Reaction and Blind authority for the more punk side of things. Metalcore/Hardcore Bands from outside the UK to check out would be: Blistered (US) XDevourX (Belgium) and Deconsecrate (Belgium) who are probably the heaviest band going right now.

2. You’ve guys started back in 99 tell us how it started

SPIDERCREW STARTED AS A BUNCH OF BROTHERS FROM THE VSHC SCENE FROM VARIOUS BANDS GETTING TOGETHER AND JAMMING OUT. SEAN SHOWED UP IN VIENNA FROM NYC BEING FRIENDS WITH VARIOUS TATTOO ARTISTS FROM VIENNA AND AFTER TOURING WITH ONLY ATTITUDE COUNTS HE FIT IN PERFECT WITH THE CREW AND SPIDERCREW WAS BORN.

3. You better recognize released by I scream records in 2001 tell us about it, how you’ve guys hooked up

YOU BETTER RECOGNIZE WAS REVISED AT TANK STUDIOS NEAR HANOVER GERMANY. AFTER IT WAS RECORDED & MIXED ETC. WE SENT IT TO A FEW LABELS & ONNO CRO-MAG (R.I.P.) WAS VERY INTERESTED. HE HAD HEARD THE BUZZ AROUND EUROPE ABOUT THIS INTERNATIONAL BAND AND SAW A FEW SHOWS. THAT’S HOW WE GOT STARTED WITH ISCREAM RECORDS. GREAT GUYS THERE, THEY HELPED US A BUNCH..

4. Tell us about your relation with Only Attitude Counts

ONLY ATTITUDE COUNTS THE VIENNA STYLE KINGS. MIKE CRUCIFIED, VOCALIST FOR SPIDERCREW IS ALSO THE VOCALIST FOR OAC. OUR VSHC BROTHERHOOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN TIGHT SO WE ALWAYS GOT GUYS HELPING OUT AT SHOWS OR TOURS. I. (SEAN) DID A BUNCH OF OAC SHOWS & TOURS AND HELPED WITH VOCALS & WHATEVER. ALWAYS A GREAT TIME WITH THE CREW. SC & OAC DID A GREAT TOUR TOGETHER IN 2002 WHICH NONE OF US WILL EVER FORGET. WE LIVE ON THE ROAD & PLAY AS OFTEN AS WE CAN SINCE SEAN LIVES IN NY, WE JAM WHAT WE CAN WHILE HE IS IN TOWN.

5. You guys have 2 vocals any thought’s on that, how you guy’s came up with the idea of 2 vocals

2 VOCALS JUST HAPPENED. SC HAD ONLY 2 PRACTICES UNDER OUR BELT WHEN SEAN CAME TO THE PRACTICE ROOM. WE WROTE A LETTER TO J. THAT DAY & IT JUST SEEMED LIKE ALL THE PIECES FIT INTO PLACE PERFECTLY.. WE WEREN’T LOOKING TO BE DIFFERENT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT AT THE TIME, IT JUST WORKED OUT THAT WAY & WE DIDN’T THINK TWICE ABOUT IT!

6 Tell us about Austria, how’s the scene there?

THE SCENE IN VIENNA & AROUND ABOUTS IS LIKE MOST SCENES, HAVING IT’S UPS & DOWNS. RIGHTNOW THE VIENNA SCENE IS GREAT WITH A BUNCH OF VENUES TO PLAY AND GREAT BANDS SUCH AS BLIND ALLEY SIX, BLOODSHED REMAINS, IN THE CAGE, BUST THE CHAIN, LIVE LIFE, SENSE OF JUSTICE, LOWLIFE, THE MIGHTY OAC & US, JUST TO NAME A FEW. ALOT OF NEW KIDS COMING UP & KEEPING IT ALIVE. THEN U GOT US OLD GUYS (HAHA) DOING WHAT WE’VE DONE FOR YEARS..

7. In 2011 you guy’s released Still Crazy But Not Insane with WTF records, tell us about this album?

STILL CRAZY WAS RECORDED IN 2009. SPIDERCREW RECORDING IS A BIT DIFFERENT THAN MOST BANDS THESE DAYS CUZ SEAN DOESN’T LIVE IN VIENNA ANYMORE.. WE SENT HIM RIFFS AND IDEAS & HE WROTE LYRICS AND HAD IDEAS FROM THERE. HE CAME TO VIENNA FOR A FEW WEEKS IN AUGUST OF ’09 & WE PLAYED A FEW SHOWS & RECORDED STILL CRAZY. WAS A GREAT TIME IN THE STUDIO & WE HAD SOME GREAT GUEST VOCALISTS & FRIENDS HANGING AROUND. AS OAC SAYS, LIKE A FAMILY! WE’RE REAL PROUD OF THE ALBUM, IT CAME STRAIGHT FROM WHAT WAS INSIDE OF EACH OF US. NO BULLSHIT.. FROM THE MUSIC TO THE VOCALS, JUST STRAIGHT UP FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES & THE LIVES WE LEAD IN GENERAL.

8. What will we see in Spidercrew in the near future?

AS THIS INTERVIEW IS BEING DONE, WE’RE IN THE STUDIO RECORDING OUR FOLLOW UP TO STILL CRAZY.. THIS ONE WILL BE TITLED “TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG” IT IS A FANTASTIC STRAIGHT UP OLD SCHOOL SPIDERCREW STYLE FOLLOW UP! REALLY LOOKING FORWARD FOR THIS TO BE RELEASED IN 2014 FOR OUR 15 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!! WE’RE COMING STRONGER THAN EVER & NOT SLOWING DOWN! MORE ANTHEMS & KNOCK YOUR TEETH OUT HARDCORE!

9. Asia tour?

OAC WILL BE TOURING IN ASIA IN 2014 AND I (SEAN) WILL BE COMING ALONG ON TOUR WITH MY BROTHERS. SO EXPECT A FEW SURPRISES WHEN OAC HIT ASIA THIS YEAR. SPIDERCREW IS ALSO WORKING OUT ARRANGEMENTS TO HIT ASIA LATER ON IN ’14, SO KEEP YA EYES PEELED. REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT CUZ THE ASIAN SCENE HAS SUPPORTED US & HEAVY MUSIC IN GENERAL WITH A PASSION LIKE NO OTHERS!

10. Last words

SPIDERCREW WANNA SAY THANKS TO YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW & TO THE KIDS ALL OVER ASIA FOR THE SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS.
