Hi guys how are you, tell me a bit about BILLFOLD? What the name means
 
Billfold is a band that was officially established in 2010. The inception of the group started when Pam, following his separation from his previous band “Sweet Punch for Kids” (SPFK), decided to form a new ensemble. He invited Brez to join as manager – who previously managed SPFK – as well as Sam, one of the guitarists from SPFK. Guided by this preliminary framework, they embarked on their search for other members: Ferin taking up bass, Angga on Guitar and Gania providing the vocals. The portfolio of Billfold comprises two albums, two EPs along with four singles in total. Our chosen name ‘Billfold’ refers to a type of folded wallet; we felt that it resonated nicely without being overbearing or excessively mellow — akin somewhat to our music’s temperament.

What band influence you guys? 

In terms of musical influences several bands have had an impact however early on SET YOUR GOALS, DAGGERMOUTH and FOUR YEAR STRONG were notably inspirational in shaping our sound. 

 I see bands come and go what makes you guys stick together? 

There have admittedly been changes within Billfold’s roster. Sam made the decision at one point to leave the group opting instead for work as a shopkeeper and his space was filled by Oink. In 2014 Angga left too; surprisingly though this led Sam back into joining us once more at Billfold. Time moved onwards and eventually in 2018 came when mutually we elected to disband – performing what would be our last show together… However, fast forward till end-2022 finds us initiating anew albeit with reshuffling roles taken up by members: Pam (drum), Ferin (bass), Sam (guitar), Angga (guitar) , Oink (guitar), Tika(vocal) and Savira(vocal). Ultimately it’s safe concluding: Our collective passion towards music creation has truly kept us unwavering through all these periods.

I saw from your social you’ve been on tour in Japan tell us about it? 

Yes we have recently returned from Japan with our newly-formed team. This constitutes our second tour in Japan, following our maiden journey in 2017 accompanied by our original formation. Our experience with tours in Japan has so far been thoroughly enjoyable as we are astounded by the immense enthusiasm and warm reception of the local audience towards our music. Indeed, they have embraced us wholeheartedly, purchasing tangible products like physical releases and customized T-shirts that we brought exclusively for this tour. Our first tour to Japan back in 2017 was met with fans who had previously experienced one of our performances back home, Indonesia, causing them to continue their support even when we performed overseas. The country remains a favorite destination for us continually and hopefully soon enough it would be possible to broaden horizons and touch down into other parts of Asia or even beyond. 

What is the craziest thing that ever happened on tour? 

While on this journey there were certainly some challenging moments such as rogue promoters failing to compensate us before disappearing without a trace. However, these incidents pale against the joy derived from experiencing entirely new environments we’d never previously seen whilst also forming new alliances along this venture. 

New album is coming out soon? 

Looking forward at what’s next for us – there could potentially be exciting updates coming up within this year 2024, although nothing is concrete yet over whether it will involve releasing a single track, EP or deciding upon a full-blown album version instead.

Talked about the music industry what do see yourself in it? 

Speaking specifically about the Indonesian Music Industry landscape; We believe that ours was indeed one amongst many pioneering bands accosted by female vocalists promoting musics similar to ours quite expressively put forth on display which insinuated newer band formations thus proudly bestowing ourselves as triggers igniting dormant creative passions amongst aspiring musicians providing them ample opportunities towards embarking musical journeys finally having courageously expressed themselves deeper than ever before.

10 years from now what do you see in this band 

As time rolls remorselessly onwards scenarios tend appear more matured nevertheless only sharpening complexities further while always aiming towards maintaining coherence intact coupled with having fun throughout this experience. 

Any band worth mentioning?

The list of bands that have significantly influenced our albums include eminent names such as NOFX, Rage Against the Machine, Shelter, CIV, Gorilla Biscuits, H20, Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Other noteworthy influences encompass Verse, Four Year Strong, New Found Glory, Daggermouth and Set Your Goals.

Hi guys tell us a bit about yourself and where do you came from 

We are a group of youth , wich living a normal live, like working and having a family. But we want to share what we believe, to create something, and to express what we feel about anything through our music. We met at gigs, be in a circle of friends, going out together even with different personal backgrounds and music. From melodic punk, hc, to metal. Adit (bass) entrepreneur and head of family. Frandy (vocal) company employee and skater. Ico (drums) is a barista and metalhead. we are from bitung city,a small town in north sulawesi

How’s the scenes there 

Bitung underground scene is very small compare with scene in Jakarta or Bandung or other Big Cities in Indonesia. The main problem in Bitung underground scene is the lack of space to create an event or gigs there, the one thing that makes it so special in Bitung Underground scene is the combining of gigs and event with Metal and Punks or other music genres. This is good, cause create no boundaries and togetherness as a family in a small scene in small city. Bitung Underground scene no doubt is struggling but also surviving it cause.

What kinda music can you describe your style 

Listeners called our music short but meaningful hardcore, or you can call it a short time hardcore style.

What Influence you? 

Champion, youth of today, comeback kid, straight answer, xdeloreanx

What do you think about the music now and the movement with it

The way I see music today is like a branching tree. There are just way too many genres and styles of music. There is a Lot of great music being made right now though. And the music movement today is very dynamic, you know, because there are many media platforms to introduce our music to others.

Underground scene tell us about it 

Any song that is not being legally commercialized is considered underground. Such music may tend to express common ideas, such as high regard for sincerity and intimacy, freedom of creative expression as opposed to the highly formulaic composition of commercial music, and appreciation of artistic individuality as opposed to conformity to current mainstream trends.

Do you agree music is a political influence and the sound of people, so do tell 

Yes , we’re agreed. For us, music played a critical role in inspiring, mobilizing, and giving voice to the civil rights movement. Sing the freedom songs today for the same reason the slaves sang them, because we too are in bondage and the songs add hope to our determination.

What do you see in your band and hope with it 

For now, we use Slide to speak up our opinion through music but if in the future our music can be accepted in the wider community, we appreciate it and consider it as a bonus.

What the craziest thing happened on stage

We ever got an invitation to perform and in the rundown it was our turn to perform at 2 pm. Can you imagine , the band perform without an audience.

LIES!

Hi guys how you’ve been. it’s been a while. Is there any changes in band formation what’s new?

Hi Garth! My name is Rene. I’m the vocalist of Lies!. In terms of changes, we are a five-piece band now. One of our close friends Martijn joined us on guitar. Martijn is an experienced guitarist and most of us played with him  in other bands already, like Expulsion and Not In This Lifetime.

What’s changed in terms of recording in this pandemic and how is it impacts you 

For months we were unable to rehearse due to the lockdowns. Sander our guitarist recorded some albums before and wanted to build his own professional recording studio, so he did during the lockdowns. A bucket list thing which is also convenient for the band. This situation gave us our own rehearsal space and a recording studio. In the meantime we recorded a couple of tracks, some of which you can already listen on Bandcamp, YouTube and Spotify. And there is more coming up.

Tell us about your new album?  

When we started rehearsing about two years ago the pandemic started. The future was uncertain for a long time and our government changed plans many times. We didn’t believe it was a good thing to release anything without playing live. Since January we can make new plans because they gave up most of all restrictions. We had 3 tracks ready and started releasing a song every month. This way we get instant attention. It works out great and the response on the new tracks is overwhelming so far. In May we release the three singles on an EP (CD) with additional two re-recorded “classic Lies! songs”.

How about shows and gigs due the pandemic 

Unfortunately no shows at all. Europe was in a lockdown for two years with less restrictions for just a few months. Some seated shows were allowed but that’s not what a hardcore show is about. We need that interaction with the audience. Venues need to catch-up their multiple rescheduled shows and from there on, also we can start doing shows. The first show is in May on Pitfest. A big 3-day festival with At The Gates, Cryptic Slaughter, Backfire!, Discharge, Grave and 40 more bands. 

We used to distribute using cassette, CD and vinyl now we used platform in terms in distribution any thoughts on that 

It’s all about streaming today. Every continent or even country has its own favourite platforms. We reach Asian, Eastern-European or Russian hardcore and metal kids mostly through Bandcamp and YouTube. Spotify is popular in Western Europe andthe USA. Also there are some other platforms like Tidal and Deezer. 

Still we would love to put out a new vinyl record someday but with 10 months of pressing production time we prefer to release new songs digital or on CD this year. It is what it is.

If you ask me about the future of distribution then I believe in “video”. For example what Hate5Six does to the US-scene recording very professional looking videos of shows. It’s insane how good he captures the energy of a live show. You can see that people like it. It is good for band and audience and another way to discover bands. He creates a jump-start for a lot of bands. Sometimes even better than a record label ever did. 

What bands influence you the most 

I think everyone will hear some All Out War or Kickback influences in our music. Sander our guitarist and main songwriter is just like most of us a huge fan of both bands. For me, talking about the vocals, I get my inspiration from hardcore to metal. I like frontmen like Scott Vogel (Terror), Stephen Bessac (Kickback), Todd Jones (Nails), Nergal (Behemoth) or Justice Tripp (Trapped Under Ice) for their unique voices and even more for their attitude on stage. I prefer powerful mid-growls or shouting with variety in low and high pitches. A mix of the singers I just mentioned. At least that is what I try to do.

What do you see in hardcore metal now?

Even though the shows were scarce, a lot of bands released good singles and albums. To name a few.. Hardcore / punk: Adversary, Bloodsucker, Lifesick, Inclination, Worst Doubt, Obstruktion, School Drugs, Whispers. Metal: Dödsrit, Grave Miasma, Gatecreeper, 1914, Spectral Wound and maybe my favourite of last year was Frozen Soul’s album. 

Talking about Ukraine band 1914. I hope that the current situation in the world ensures that we, the cultural scene, can be a good emotional outlet for the people and create awareness of what is going on. We’re living behind our devices too much and need to interact and look each other in the eyes.

Concrete Ties

Hi guys how are you tell us about your band where you from and your influence

We are Concrete Ties from western Massachusetts. We are a Thrash/Hardcore band. Our influences very from member to member but the common thread is we love heavy ass music. Some influences include 100 Demons, The Red Chord, Metallica, Sick Of It All, Buried Alive, Pantera, etc.

Is this your new line up with female vocals tell us more about it

Yes this is a new lineup with Leyla Eileen on vocals. We lost our original vocalist last year and started taking vocal submissions. It wasn’t something we planned, It just so happened that she was the right person for the job. She has the right attitude and the same goals we have, so she fits in well

How this pandemic effect your band and recording process and how you adjusting

Well, the pandemic kind of put everything on hold. It did give us some time to write and record some new songs but we have had some set backs too. So really we’ve spent a lot of this time trying to get the band back on its feet

Are you using social media platforms and other platforms to promote and distribution in the old days we used zine, cassette, gigs and vinyl tell us what you think about this new era

Yes, you have to use social media these days. It’s good because our reach is much greater and more people can be exposed to you faster. Everything we do is online wether it be communicating with bookers to promoting gigs, sharing photos and all of that. The down side is there are so many good bands these days, you have to find ways to stand out.

Are we still need small gigs?

We will pretty much play any gig that comes our way these days. It’s all about getting your name out there. Even a small gig in a new area helps because new people see you and then they tell their friends you know? Small shows are the lifeblood of hardcore. Without them we cannot exist

How do you see hardcore evolve now

It depends where you’re looking. I think more bands are breaking through to the mainstream these days and heavy music is more accepted. If you look at local shows there are still tons of new bands playing old school hardcore but that’s not necessarily what breaks through most times. We’ve noticed less and less young people at local shows. The young people seem to be more attracted to the mainstream side of things rather than the underground which is kind of sad.

What other plans you have coming out soon

We are currently booking lots of shows and finishing up a new 6 song EP that we hope to release soon. We also have a single from that album called “Disobey” dropping on March 17th. Really we just want to get back out there and play again. Now that people are booking shows again our main goal is just to travel and play, that’s it

1. Hey guys how are you, please introduce yourself

Hello, we are SOULDAS, Iez = Bass, Done = Vocal, Guitar, Salim : Guitar and Gilang : Drums. we’re formed on June 2019, Done was started with a few bands before SOULDAS, such as GHOSTEREO, XJIWAX and FAROUT. Iez, has a tribute band for Metallica named “MAsker of Puppets, Gilang has another bands (Mouthless-Metal and SENGAT-experimental Metal), Salim also has a few bands before SOULDAS. we started to write and finally have 5 songs to record it.

2. Congrats on your EP tell us about it

We’ve already launch 2 EP’s actually, the first one is PNDMC20 (2 songs), the second is ULTRAVIOLET (3songs)some of the songs written by our vocalist before the band is formed. and then we start to play and record it.
basically it is an alternativeRock music or maybe Post Grunge. you name it,  

3. Why only 3 song? Why not six or maybe a full album 

That’s already 5 songs on 2 EP’s we still on progress for the album, maybe next year after this Pandemic hahaha

4. What influence you what inspired you to write a song 

People, love, life, the social issues etc

5. Most of you I think is not young anymore what makes decide to make a band at this certain age? 

We are still 21 or 25 something hahahahahaha. we’re just having fun with the music. these things to makes us feel alive just to listen it or play it. to keep our mind still sane for sure hahaha

6 expectations what do you expect with your band at this time

Keep exploring and creating. we still have a lot of things to do with these 

7. How’s the music scene now in Jakarta. Tell us about it 

Good, there’s a lot of movement, new bands, and events also.but we dont know since these pandemic time. 

8. During this difficult time how do you see in artist or a band to survive without gigs or stage 

They pretty much do their gigs on a digital platform such as youtube,instagram and others, but for us we just keep doing the same thing making a new music and still surviving through this hard times caused by pandemic

1. Hi guys how are you, all good I hope. Tell us a bit of yourself? 

We are fight for another hero, emo rock/post-hardcore band from manado. formed in august 2010, our recent line up consist of scream vocal yudistira dama, guitar/vocal kevin wongkar, synth/keys jonathan tubongkasi, bassist arya primasatya, drummer harfinsha

2. You just launched a new album, is it your debut album do tell us about it 

Yes, “Sweet Affection in Your Eyes” is our debut album after almost 10 years we formed. just like another emo song, our album telling about broken hearted, forced to separate, not being able to be together. we try to make song that can relate with the listener so they can feel the story behind the song.

3. What type of music you like to called yourself and why? 

We play a mixture of emo rock and post-hardcore. for us emo means Emotional, so we put that emotional on lyrics and sound, but we also use modern synth that popular with post-hardcore music around 2010 , the era we formed.

4. What band influence you guys 

We listen to all genre, but the most influence us is alesana, bring me the horizon, saosin, issues, confide, attack-attack, and asking alexandria.

5. Lets talked about music industry. What do you think about Indonesia music industry 

We think the music industry in indonesia grows much better now, underground music, indie and another non-mainstream music can easly get listened and promoted through social media now. so they have a same opportunity to get known by people like mainstream music.

6. Do you guys think your one of the underground music so called scene 

yes we are, because the roots of our music is in underground scene.

7.  How music scene evolved in your town do you guys know your history 

We think underground scene in our town grow well, most of the band already use digital music platform to promote their music. we know a little bit about the history, bloodlines, almighty human cartoon, sabaoth, durhaka, that some legends band names that make the scene grows.

8. Can you named the individual that brought the out of the box music to your town.  Who started it all 

We think richard rahim was the one of the most influential person to make the scene grows

9. How media effects this Music Industry thoughts on that 

We think media give much impact to band like us, so we can be more known widely.

10. What’s your goal tell us about it 

We think every band goals is money, fame and glory. but for us that’s just too far, for now our goals is just to make people aware about us.

11. What do you see yourself in the next 10 years do you still playing music 

Maybe we’ll still doing same thing, but stay up to date with the times.

12. Which band do you like to mention now that worth mentioning 

In our town, adult diversion was one of the best indies band in this town and worth to listen.

Hi guys how are you, congratulations with the ep launch. Tell us bit about Prime? 

Thank you, hope you get to like our music. Prime is the thing that I wanted to do since years ago. 

Imagine about how you express your self through music with the right people and at the right moment. 

What influence you guys? And how it influence your music and attitude. 

We get a major influences from the life we live. There are anger, joy and sorrow that need to be released through music. 

So that we thought that starting the band called Prime would be our way to express our self. 

What do you see in hardcore now? And compare with scene from the 90’s

If you are talking about Jakarta Hardcore Scene, we see progression over the musics as there are a lot of good bands here. 

It doesn’t show much differences from the 90s era as the hardcore bands here still bring the spirit of 90s. 

Well, not to mention that some people are gone but the young bloods born.  

What do you expect people to hear from Prime?

It was a good point when you were asking about the 90s, because we expect people can see us like Alternative 90s bands. 

Kinda punk, kinda grunge, kinda metal, kinda hardcore.    

Can you see you guys still playing in 10 or 20 years from now? Why.. 

I will be like 50 or 60 years old by that time hahahaha. And yes I will still be writting songs and play them with the band. 

We hope Prime will reach the top. 

Favorite hardcore band? 

Indonesian HC Bands: Tripple X, Dead Pits, The Jinx, Feel The Burn and Final Attack. 

Others: Bad Brains, Minor Threat, CIV, Agent Orange and Circle Jerks. 

Whats the craziest thing you ever saw in a hardcore show?

Here in Jakarta, the most craziest thing is when HC kids attending HC gigs without supporting the bands by paying tickets !!

PRIMAL AGE

Hello everyone at PRIMAL AGE, good to have you in this interview, please introduce yourself to the readers of FTAR?!

Hey guys, i’m Dimitri, I play the bass in PRIMAL AGE since 95. I’m also responsible for the lyrics, the singing and some tracks.

Tell us the history of PRIMAL AGE, you’ve got more than 20 years of existences, please share us about your personal and musical journey with PRIMAL AGE?!

Primal Age it’s 3 mcd, 2 albums, 1 split, a lot of compilations, more than 400 shows all over Europe,1 mexican tour in 2011, one in Japan in 2013, 1 in Brasil in 2015, a lot of festivals like que Free Edge fest,Good Life fest 1999, Superbowl of Hardcore 99, Chaulnes Metal fest, Sonisphere off big four 2012 , Bloodaxe festival  Tokyo 2013, Hellfest 2007.
We all work beside PxA, so we just see each other to play the music we love. With Didier and now with the return of Stéphane on drums we are the 3 survivors since the beginning of the band 23 years ago.

In 2017, PRIMAL AGE back with “A Silent Wound” EP after almost 7 years since “The Gearwheels Of Time”, what happened during that time? And what are things that keep motivates you to write music as a band?!

We always take time between 2 record sessions. We just record when we feel ready for that and sure of what we search as a result. Another reason is the changing of guitar players.

Between “The Gearwheels….” and “A Silent Wound”, you’ve released a split project with MOSTOMALTA [Argentina] and CHERISH [Japan], and also another split with ABSONE [France], any stories about those projects?

We were 4 members of PxA playing in Absone between 2000 ans 2005. It was a side project based on vegan straight edge lifestyle.
The other split was a huge project. Our final goal was a japan and a brazilian tour, and we did both.

“A Silent Wound” is such a good EP, short, fast, and heavily aggressive! What can you tell us about this EP? I’d like to know more about this EP..

It was a huge collaboration with a great friend of the band, Sylvain (drummer in an old school band named Seekers of the Truth). He also was in Absone with us and made some replacements on guitar for PxA… A very important guy for us.

Who wrote the music? who wrote the lyrics? any thoughts about that Slayer medley?!

The music is made by the guitar players and also by myself. As I said, I write the lyrics and do the singing parts. But everyone can bring some idea about our music.
I think the Slayer’s medley is a well done, we play it with an enormous pleasure. 

Please give us some list of your favourite bands, or maybe they who influenced you personally and also as PRIMAL AGE?

I can give you few names as Slayer, Napalm Death, Hatebreed, Madball, Testament, Sick Of It All, Biohazard, Dew Scented, Morning Again, Earth Crisis…
After almost 20 years of existence, do you all still willing to continue to write music? Exactly, what are the goals of this band?

We have the music for the next album, but we take our time as usual. Passion is still the same and we want more. We hope to see more countries as yours if it’s possible. The flame is still burning as we were always 20 years old, so… Let’s go.

How do you see PRIMAL AGE 20 years ago and then now? And what could I expect from all of you in the next 10 years?

I think the pleasure is bigger, cause we play each show as it was the last one.
But the story is not finished yet. The 2 last bands we are fans of and we never play with are Sick If It All and Suicidal Tendencies. So, we can’t stop. As I said, so many countries we don’t know.

STEADFAST

Hi guys tell us about Steadfast?

Initially steadfast was formed by reza, (scream/dead pits/slowdown), bonar (guitar/thinking straight/duct tape surgery), alvin (drum/noxa), and mario (bass/fom/popcorn) in 2015 as we were searching for a new concept of oldskool hc music. Along the way, alvin and mario were replaced by ihsan (drum/feel the burn/final attack/thinking straight) and betok (guitar/no compromise) and the formation last until 2017 when we recorded our 4 songs. Bonar then left and the position was replaced by diyan (real project/stand clear). So current steadfast members are me, ihsan, betok and diyan.

What hardcore means to you guys?

For us, hardcore is a positive way of life to express our ideas and thoughts. It teaches us to be strong, fight against mediocre life and never give up.

I see guys are not kids anymore haha tell us the growth in hardcore and the difference back in the days

Are you sure?? Look again, i’m still the same fucking kid when I started joining the scene in 1996 hahaha… 

Back in the old days it’s not easy to get references on stuff related to punk hardcore such as cd, tape, band tshirt, zine etc. If we compare today, you can find almost anything in the internet. Kids can progress instantly and sometime it looked they dont get the essence of playing hardcore. It should be more than you play it right, mosh hard and dress cool. But at the end it depends on how you want to live it and make the most of it.

Tour lyfe tell us about it, whats the craziest thing that ever happened

We had a short tour on 2017 where we played in Johor bahru, kuala lumpur and singapore to promote our new ep. My flight arrived in singapore and need to continue by bus to JB. Normally it only took around 1 hour including immigration process to reach JB fr singapore.But it’s friday at 6pm and I was stucked in the immigration for 4 hours because thoudands of people like workers, tourists etc went to JB from singapore. It was crazy and i missed the show when I finally arrived at JB. Also other thing our bassist can’t make it for the whole tour because of passport issue and we need to find a back up within 2 days. Thanks to Aizam (homerun/second combat) and Azhar who helped us to fill in the position on last minutes. Overall it’s a grear tour and we’re glad we could make it and meet lots of new friends in malaysia and singapore.

Frack is Hardcore Punk Band from Jakarta, Bogor, Bekasi. we have released “BEYOND REALITY (EP)” under Trueside Records in cassette format, and “2018 PROMO (DEMO)” in cd format. Then we have released the DVD “BEYOND REALITY ALBUM RELEASE PARTY”, Frack documentation on the Release Party album at Rossi Musik Fatmawati, filmed by 5 camera angles and recorded live on 11.02.2017 released by Trueside Records.

Tell us about your new album

We were trying to do something that we had never done before, it will be same as previous album but more intense musically and aesthetically.

Beyond Reality Album Release Party (you can check AMPM Studio Youtube Channel) and Turnstile Live in Jakarta.

What do you see in hardcore now

Now all the matters related with the money, still the same but more drama.

Basically the scene is now being wriggled, many new bands are popping up, lots of old bands reunion again, lots of tour bands, more gigs popping up.

Housed (Jakarta), Whispers (Thailand), Vibrant (Bandung), World Domination (Depok), Bright (Bogor), Madness Kids (Sukabumi), Outrage (Jakarta).

Favorite bass player

Indra Frack while playing bass, and Adit edge while playing bass on Thinking Straight.

Touring any crazy story?

During Frack last tour to SG, MY, Thailand, Dendy our vocalist lost passport in Thailand when at airport want to go home.
